Daily mountain bike trips from San Cristobal de Las Casas
These bike tours are promoted by a group of young people from San Cristóbal who love nature and outdoor activities and are interested in environmental and sustainability issues
There are several routes which will take you through the amazing countryside of Chiapas and its colourful villages, in the respect of the local population and of the environment. By visiting Chiapas at a slower pace you will enjoy a more authentic travel experience and have the chance to observe some wildlife and interact with people, benefiting the local economy.
Tours are available everyday, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 2pm Most tours last approx 4 hours.
Green Routes: Huitepec and Moxviquil ecological reserves
The reserve of Huitepec is a sacred site for the indigenous settlers; you can bike there from San Cristobal and then walk inside the reserve. You will walk up the second highest mountain of the San Cristobal Valley through a cloud forest, where you will be able to see birds, rodents, amphibians and reptiles.
Moxviquil is a mythologic figure for the Tzotzil people, another important site for the locals, the reserve includes pines and oak forests and native flora and fauna.
In Moxviquil there is the possibility of camping for an exciting night under the stars, returning to San Cristobal by bike the next morning, and even to enjoy a Tematzcal, the Mayan traditional steam bath.
The tours include bike rental, local guide, helmet, entrance to the reserve, water and a traditional drink (plus dinner, tent and breakfast for the camping trip).
Bird watching Routes: (departures at 7am or 10pm)
There are plenty of opportunities to watch birds around San Cristobal and a bike tour is a good way to get in the woods for some observation. As birds are most active early in the morning an early start is a must (unless you want to see nocturnal birds in which case a night ride can be organised).
Adventure Routes: Arcotete - Florecillas
This is a tougher route on the mountains surrounding San Cristóbal, 4 hours on the bike. You will ride through green fields and rocky paths to a stone arch eroded by a river and you will hear some local legends about the place.
Historical Routes: Jovel and Tzots
A historical bike tour around San Cristobal's neighbourhoods will take you to its secret corners on cobblestones streets with a visit of the city's Historical Museum and a chocolate break where you will learn more about the origins of cocoa and its use by the Mayan people. A shorter version of this route can be done by night (without the visit at the museum), to have a different perspective of the city under the stars. The Tzots route takes you up to the village of San Juan Chamula with a visit of the famous church, where indigenous rite are still performed and Mayan and catholic religions are deeply intertwined.
The tours include bike rental, local guide, helmet, entrance to the museum or the church, chocolate or coffee.
