Miramar Lagoon Tour

  • 3 days camping tour in Laguna Miramar, Chiapas
In the heart of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve you will find this amazing body of crystal-blue water. Swimming in this water is simply irresistible! The tour combines a bit of hiking, kayaking and visits to archeological sites.

The Laguna Miramar is located in the heart of the Monte Azules Biosphere Reserve, deep within the Lacandon Jungle. Its total area represents 16 square kilometers of crystal clear water fed by underground, freshwater springs.

The lagoon maintains the same amazing clarity and warm temperature all year round, inviting you to explore its waters by canoe and to enjoy its peace and natural tranquillity.

The climate is humid and tropical, with temperatures from 25 to 38 degrees Celsius. The best time of the year to take this tour is between November and June, but it is possible to do it all year round, as the majority of the rainfall happens at night.
The only inconvenience might be some muddy trails during the rainy season, which make your hiking a bit harder.

There is no need to get vaccinations before taking this trip, as malaria is not present in this area.
We recommend bringing hiking boots or trainers, swimming suit, sandals, summer clothes (but also long sleeves and long trousers), headlamp or torch, hat and sun screen, insect repellent.

    Itinerary:

Day 1: The tour starts in San Cristobal de Las Casas at 7:30 a.m. On the way to the lagoon you will make a short stop in Comitan for breakfast. Upon arriving to the river, a boat will take you upstream (2-3 hrs) to the small village of Zapata. Once all the camping equipment is ready, you will start a two hour hike to reach the edge of the lagoon. During camping preparation and dinner you will have the chance to swim in the clear, blue water of the lagoon and relax in your hammock.
Day 2: The second day will be dedicated to visiting the lagoon and its surroundings. After breakfast canoes will be taken out to go and see ancient rock paintings, then you can enjoy the sun and a good swim. Later in the day you will return to the campsite for lunch, before taking a 20 minute walk through the jungle to visit the Gruta del Mono (Monkey Cave) The more adventurous visitors in the group may choose to continue hiking for about 1 hour to the Laguna de los Cocodrilos (The Crocodile Lagoon). This walk will offer you the chance to be in close touch with nature, listening to its sounds and discover the area's flora and fauna.
Day 3: After breakfast you will have time for a last swim before starting packing up. Going back along the same route (a bit of hiking, boat trip and transfer back to town by van), you will reach San Cristobal at around 8pm.
