4 days tour from and to San Cristobal through the Lacandon Jungle
This tour will take you to one of the most important protected areas in Mexico: the "Montes Azules Biosphere Reserves".
You will take a boat trip along the Tzendales river and visit the impressive archaeological sites of Yaxchilan, Bonampak y Palenque.
Itinerary
Day 1: Departure from San Cristobal de las Casas early in the morning to Comitaˇn de Dominguez to visit the archaeological site of Chinkultic and the Montebello Lakes, "Lagos de Montebello". Transfer to the "Guacamayas Camp" for overnight accommodation, where you will see long-tailed brilliantly colored macaws. At night you can hear monkeys howling around the camp. (included meals: lunch and dinner)
Day 2: Boat trip along the Rio Tzendales within the Monte Azules biosphere reserve, where you will have the chance to observe the flora and fauna of the Lacandon Jungle. The boat trip will last around 3 hours. Return to the Guacamayas Camp and van transfer to the archaeological site of Bonampak, where you can admire the only example of Mayan murals in Mesoamerica. Transfer to "Campamento Rio Lacanja" for overnight accommodation, where you will sleep in a rustic cabana on the river bank. (included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner)
Day 3: Morning walk in the selva to visit the archeological ruins of Lacanja - a small site still hidden in the jungle - and the Moctuniha waterfalls, where you can swim amongst the vegetation. Return to the campsite for the van transfer to "Frontera Corozal", where you will get the motor boat along the Usumacinta river to reach the archaeological site of Yaxchilan. Return to the Rio Lacanja camp for overnight accommodation (included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner)
Day 4: Morning transfer to Palenque, where you will visit one of the most famous and charming Mayan sites, completely immersed in the tropical jungle. In the afternoon you will visit the Misol-ha y Agua Azul waterfalls on the way back to San Cristobal de las Casas (included meals: breakfast)
TOUR DATES: Departures every 1 or 2 weeks, according to requests
Number of participants: minimum 4, maximum 18 people.
Things to bring with you on tours:
For staying at the camp and visiting the archaeological sites bring summer clothes, although its better if you have at least one long sleeve shirt and long trousers which will protect you much better from sun and insects. Bring also a sweater, as evenings can be cool.
You should wear comfortable trainers or walking shoes, and maybe bring a pair of sandals.
Bring also toiletries, towels, hat, sun screen and insect repellent.
You will also need a torch wih extra batteries with you to walk around the camp at night (although cabanas, bathrooms and the restaurant are lighted of course)
Bed linen are provided and you do not need sleeping bags or camping gear
