8 days tour from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas to Villahermosa, Tabasco
This is an amazing trip around the entire state of Chiapas, including visits to Mayan archaeological sites, tropical jungles and natural parks, and the picturesque colonial town of San Cristobal de Las Casas.
You will have the chance to discover the luxurious flora and fauna of Chiapas through some nature and bird-watching excursions, enjoy some adventure and sport activities like hiking, kayaking, boating and rafting (optional) and interact with some native communities around San Cristobal and in the Lacandon Jungle.
Accommodation is both in hotels and cabins in eco-lodges.
We recommend bringing: hiking boots or trainers, clothing for tropical weather (plus jacket or fleece and rain jacket), torch, hat and sun screen, insect repellent.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Meeting at Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport. The first stop will be the Sumidero Canyon, which is famous for its 900+ meter high limestone walls. Unlike most trips into the canyon, you will start out by hiking down a small gorge know as the "Cañada Muñiz". This is a 1h 30min hike through a hidden area of Chiapas, leading into the larger Sumidero Canyon.
A boat will take you across the river to the Sumidero Park, where you can traverse a 800 meter long zip-line. Crossing of the entire Sumidero Canyon by motor boat (25 km), befire arriving to the embarcadero at Cahuare. Drive to the colonial city of San Cristobal de Las Casas. Dinner (R) and accommodation in hotel.
Day 2: The day will be dedicated to discovering the city of San Cristobal and the nearby villages. You will start with a visit to the traditional public market, with its fruit and vegetables and a wide array of local colors, before hiking to the indigenous Tzotzil community of San Juan Chamula. Visit of the main plaza, the traditional church, offering an amazing example of mix between catholic and native rites, and the local cemetery. From here you will take another trail, through pine forests and delicate bromeliads to the nearby community of Zinacantan, where the local women will invite you into their homes to rest and admire their weaving. Returning to the city, you will still have time for a tour amongst the colonial-style churches and beautiful houses.

Day 3: In the morning you will be driven to the eastern part of Chiapas where you will take part to a number of activities in Montebello Lakes National Park. Short stop-over in the city of Comitan before continuing on to the Mayan archeological site of Chinkultik. Upon arriving to the national park, you will head strait to the most picturesque area around the lakes for some kayaking in their crystal waters. Accommodation will be in cabins located nearby, on the edge of Tziscao Lake.

Day 4: Leaving the lakes behind, you will drop from an altitude of 1500 meters to 200 meters above sea level, and enter one of the most humid and tropical areas in Chiapas. Brief stop-over to visit "Las Nubes", where you will hike a short distance to view the impressive waterfalls and to cross a large suspension bridge. Continuing on, you will follow the border between Mexico and Guatemala to the Ixcan River, for an hour kayaking (class 1 rapids), until reaching the Lacantun River and the Biosphere Reserve of the Montes Azules. You will spend the night in the jungle in a beautiful eco-tourism centre. Before going to bed you will have a chance to take a thrilling night-hike through the jungle to see a bit of the local wildlife.

Day 5: In the morning you will continue down the river kayaking to the small village of Chajul (5/6 hours). Along the Lacantun River, you will make several stops in the Montes Azules Reserve. Short trip by land to another eco-tourist center known as Las Guacamayas (Scarlet Macaw), an important site for the reproduction of this endangered bird. Accommodation in cabins. Day 6: In the morning you will take a short "Guacamayas (Ara Macao) hunting" hike. Obviously, we are talking about bird watching.
After breakfast you will be driven to the village of Frontera Corozal, located upon the Usumacinta River, the natural boundary between Mexico and Guatemala. From there, a 45 minutes boat ride down the river will take you to the Yaxchilán archeological site. Upon returning to Frontera Corozal you will stop to the Lacanjá Chansayab eco-tourist centre. Accommodation in cabins. Breakfast (R), lunch (L), dinner (R)
Day 7: You will eat breakfast with some friends from the Lacandon forest, and then take an excursion through the jungle and some waterfalls to reach the Mayan archeological site of Lacanja. In the evening you will visit the ancient Mayan city of Bonampak. Optional day trip: rafting in the Lacanja river and visiting the Lacanja and Bonampak archeological sites.
Travel to Palenque in the evening. Accommodation in hotel. Breakfast (R), lunch (L), dinner (R)
Day 8: After breakfast you will visit the extraordinary archeological site of Palenque, with an interesting and informative excursion into the tropical jungle. You are now at the end of this amazing tour of Chiapas, and you will be transferred to Villahermosa airport in Tabasco (if you are leaving Mexico) Breakfast (R), lunch (R)
