Copper Canyon Self Exploring Mini-Tour

  • 3 days driving your own truck from Creel to Batopilas, Chihuahua
Visit Creel, the gateway to the Copper Canyon and Batopilas, an old silver mining town, driving on your own a rented van along the Copper Canyon trails. You will be given plenty of maps, tips and information, and a free pic-nic.

You will see Museums, Missions, waterfalls, 3 canyons, Valleys and rural Raramuri Indian villages among other things on this self-driven trip. If you prefer to have someone drive you, just let us know... however, it should be said that driving yourself is half the fun!

Day 1: Pickup your van at 9am at the local office in Creel. Drive to Batopilas (about 5 hours). Visit Cusarare Falls, Cusarare Mission and Loyola Museum along the way. You can choose to make a stop in Basihuare to hike to some caves in that area or just to visit this lovely rural Raramuri town. Stop en route to view the Urique river up close from the bottom of the Copper Canyon at the Humira Bridge. Stop for a nice picnic, included in your package and complete with table and chairs, at an incredible overlook in Batopilas canyon. Arrive at the Real de Minas, a small colonial type hotel, for the night.

Day 2: Visit Hacienda San Miguel, Alexander Shepherd, The Silver Magnate's old place, now in ruins. Do a short hike to the old Aqua duct built by Alexander Shepherd to provide the town with electricity. Then drive down to visit The Lost Cathedral of Satevo just 8km outside of Batopilas. Wander the streets of Batopilas admiring the old architecture or sit by the river with a bottle of wine and relax. Sleep at the Real de Minas Hotel again.

Day 3: Return to Creel. Drop off your van at the local office and spend the night at the Best Western in Creel. For the rest of the day, you can bike through the Valley of the Mushrooms, Frogs and Monks and visit San Ignacio Mission.

Copper Canyon Train tickets from Los Mochis or Hotel arrangements in Los Mochis, Chihuahua or anywhere in between can be added on as well if you would like to simplify your journey.
This trip can be shortened by one day if you prefer to spend only one night in Batopilas.
