We are not really fond of tourist places like Playa del Carmen with its myriad of beach clubs and an almost urban night life scene, but if you are one of those eco travellers who really love the beach life and at the same time need to be close to the buzz, then Las Palapas is the right place for you.
This lodge is the sister hotel of Ecoparaiso Xixim, and despite being walking distance to Playa del Carmen's famous 5th Avenue pedestrian shopping district, it is also a special place for nature lovers, thanks to its beautiful beach, and the dense jungle vegetation surrounding the lodge.
Only 25% of the land has been used for construction. A large portion is covered by lush tropical gardens, and a full 30% of the grounds is completely untouched.
Nature has treated Hotel Las Palapas with 13 miles (20 kilometers) of white sand beaches, fringed by turquoise, crystal clear Caribbean water and abundant tropical vegetation.
In this wonderful environment, you can enjoy a paradise of tranquility, leaving the pressures of everyday life behind, and relaxing in one of the beachfront or garden rooms, where you will not find TVs, and telephone are used mainly for communications with the reception.
The rooms - or cabaƱas - are divided into different categories:
Beachfront bungalows: situated directly on the white sand beach, with thatched roofs, and equipped with 2 queen size beds, ceiling fan, bathroom with shower and private terrace with hammocks and armchairs.
Standard rooms: located in one or two story bungalows, all with lovely garden views, and some of them with thatched roofs. Their size and facilities are the same as the beachfront rooms. Some of them also feature air-conditioning.
Garden Deluxe rooms: located in one or two story bungalows, in a natural tropical environment at the back of the hotel. These rooms have an additional sitting area with sofa bed and are considerably larger than the beachfront and standard rooms. Some of them feature thatched roofs, some others air conditioning.
In the open air palapa-style Acuario restaurant you will enjoy exquisite food, starting your day with a rich buffet breakfast.
Dinner is a four course meal with a selection of two to three Mexican or International dishes.
Three times a week dinner is served buffet style with specialties from the Mayan, Caribbean and Mexican cuisine, always accompanied by live music.
On Wednesdays, the buffet is served on the beach (weather permitting), and on Saturdays special Fiestas Mexicanas are accompanied by a Mariachi band.
Lunch is served in the Casa Club, offering international and Mexican dishes and snacks, and children menus.
The Casa Club houses a bar serving exotic cocktails, cold beers and non-alcoholic beverages until midnight, and a library. A wide range of board games, billiards, and tennis table are also available.
You can relax also in the beach bar, having a drink under the swaying palm trees, or sitting in a deck chair by the swimming pool.
If you fancy a walk in the gardens, you will see and hear many species of colorful birds, meet lizards, and see plants that only grow in the jungle.
By following the nature trail from the lodge you will find a cenote - a natural well typical of the Yucatan Peninsula - and an observation tower, from the top of which you will admire the luxuriant vegetation surrounding Las Palapas.
Other hotel's facilities are: wellness center with gym, massages and treatments, souvenir shop with small cafeteria, Cyan-Ha Dive shop providing everything for water sports, telephone, fax, internet and email service, ceramic painting.
At the hotel reception desk you can ask for car and scooter rental, tours in the area, golf and laundry service.
