San Juan de Lizarraga is a very 'local flavour and out-of-the-tourist-way' hacienda in north-central Yucatan, located about 2 kilometers outside a colourful small town Telchac Pueblo, about ten miles south of the Gulf of Mexico.
Its appeal is to nature lovers, peace seekers, people who 'have time' and who like to hear the buzz of a thousand insects at night, a chorus of frogs, and the hacienda’s horned owls whooing each other…
The Hacienda offers different accommodation types:
B&B accommodation in the main house: Two connecting double rooms with private living room & bathroom, on ground floor.
Breakfast is included in price. Candle light suppers can be arranged on advance notice.
Casa Juanita: This 'ex-jail' building offers now a little bit of colonial luxury, featuring two double beds, living room area, simple kitchen facilities, bathroom, and a lovely independent garden with palapa.
Casa Chi'ich: This independent house is preferably rented by month. It comfortably sleeps 2-3 persons, and features a fully equipped kitchen, bathrooms and a laundry room with washing machine & dryer. (See below for prices and policy rental)
You can relax and enjoy the natural environment sitting by the swimming pool or in the lovely secluded terrace covered with vines, its shade offering a cool and refreshing shelter during the hot afternoon hours.
While staying at San Juan you can also learn basic nature-study techniques from naturalist Jim Conrad.
The main workshop topics, pursued for a couple of hours each day while using the Yucatan's plants and animals as 'laboratory examples' are as follows:
- Birdwatching: (How to watch and listen to birds, notes on their anatomy and behaviour)
- Plant identification and blossom interpretation (Flowering plants, trees, gardening, study of the different flowers...)
- Basic ecology (Backyard ecology, from niche to biosphere, looking for plants and animals 'ecologically', travelling as naturalists...)
Jim's two-hour-a-day, hacienda-based workshops are free. More intensive and farer-ranging study schedules can be arranged.
Visitors who will help explore and document with photographs the northern Yucatan's natural history are especially welcome.
the Hacienda is open from 1st October to 28th February
