The Lacandon forest is one of the most representative places of the biological wealth of Mexico. You can see trees up to 60 m, supporting hundreds of species of ferns, orchids and bromelias and providing refuge for the diverse species of birds and mammals that inhabit the jungle.
'Explora' has established the River Lacanja Camp in the Lacandon forest in association with the only ethnic group that has been able to live in harmony with the forest and has preserved one of the last havens of tropical forest in Mexico: The Lacandones.
The Rio Lacanja camp is open the whole year and offers lodging and meals in a natural environment.
Lodging is in bungalows (cabanas) with ensuite bathrooms located in the jungle, or other cabins with shared facilities by the Lacanja River.
All bungalows can accommodate 2, 4 or 6 people: some of them have a double bed, some others are with bunk beds.
They are simple furnished with beds with linen and blankets, and a small table with chairs.
There are also big bungalows with 2 double beds, private bathrooms and fans, which can accommodate up to 4 people.
All bathrooms have hot water and two courses meals are served in the dining room for a few dollars.
The camp has a satellite telephone, and you can find local handcrafts by the Lacandones.
From the camp you can visit the archaeological sites of Lacanja and Bonampak, and reach in only 40 minutes the town where boats leave for the archaeological site of Yaxchilan.
You can also join hiking expeditions in the jungle: a visit to the Moctuniha waterfalls and the archaeological ruins of Lacanja lasts around 3 hours and costs about USD 10 for groups of up to 10 people.
A visit to the Bonampak archaeological site lasts around 7 hours in total and costs about USD 15 for groups of up to 10 people.
You can also enjoy amazing views from an observation platform on the top of a Ceiba tree at a height of 45 metres. The tropical forest will look like a huge green carpet... The cost per person is about USD 10.
If you are in the mood for some more exploring you can join the rafting expeditions: the descent down the River Lacanja is not white water rafting, it is rather a river that has waterfalls and stretches of flat water. This is a very scenic trip during which you should be able to see various forest animals...
