The community of the ejido of Las Nubes has about 280 inhabitants, the majority of whom are indigenous tzotziles y tzeltales.
In the past 10 years they have been working to develop ecotourism projects focused on the sustainable use of the local natural and cultural resources, and in the year
2000 they created an ecotourist centre called 'Causas Verdes' (Green Causes).
Located in the Selva Lacandona, 130 km from Comitan, this ecotourist centre offers 18 cabanas/bungalows with private bathrooms and hot water, camping sites, a restaurant and it is surrounded by an amazing natural environment, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature.
To be honest, we are not sure about 'how green' this project is in terms of effective use of renewable resources, especially after having read this article by Dan Ellsworth, but we would like to concentrate on the opportunities this place offers to enjoy outdoor activities and to appreciate the natural environment, especially by locals, who generally are not particularly ecologically minded.
There are many hiking trails into the jungle and plenty to do for those who like adventure activities and sports like rafting, rappel, tirolesa (zip-line), hiking, and archery.
You can also swim in the turquoise waters of the Santo Domigo River, which forms waterfalls and natural pools surrounded by tall tropical trees and flowers,
like the local beautiful orchids.
Birders will have the chance to spot tucans, herons, king-fishers, and many other species.
