1st to 19th Pachuca, Hidalgo - The Hidalgo State Fair
Throughout first half of October, Guanajuato - Festival
Cervantino
The International Cervantes Festival (FIC) is the most important
artistic and cultural event in Mexico and in all Latin America.
It has been held without interruption every October since 1972 in
the city of Guanajuato. In its beginnings, the festival was devoted
mainly to artistic creation in the Spanish language, in homage to
Miguel de Cervantes. Today world known artists present their outstanding
works in music, opera, theatre, dance, plastic arts, cinema and
literature. The venues hosting the many cultural activities have
a great historical value: theatres like the Teatro Juárez,
Teatro Principal, Teatro Cervantes, Teatro de Minas and the Auditorio
del Estado, or the VIII century fortress Alhóndiga de Granaditas,
offering an outstanding outdoor scenery, together with the Ex-Hacienda
de San Gabriel de Barrera. Some concerts are held in the temples
of La Valenciana and La Compañía. Figurative art exhibitions
are hosted in famous museums like the Casa Museo Diego Rivera, the
Museo Olga Costa-José Chávez Morado, the Museo Iconográfico
del Quijote and the Museo del Pueblo.
All month, Guadalajara - October Festival (Fiesta de Octubre)
This Latin American Octoberfest draws thousands of participants
from around the world during the enormous month-long event promoting
tourism, industry and entertainment, which includes more than 300
special art exhibits, craft displays, parades, musical, religious,
agricultural, carnival and sports events, and - of course - Mariachi!!!
The spectacular opening parade of bands, floats and charro groups
is held in downtown Guadalajara, and most of the events are held
at the Benito Juarez Auditorium. Spectators will be able to see
all of the participating Mariachi bands as well as floats, folkloric
ballet groups and representatives from a variety of both local and
national Charro groups.
Oaxaca - Food of the Gods Festival
Unfortunately, the festival will not officially take place in 2008, but food tasting events and cooking courses will be available throughout the city
Each October food lovers visit the annual "Food of the Gods
Festival" in Oaxaca, to explore the popular Oaxacan cuisine
and experience the diverse culture of its people. With 17 indigenous
Indian groups from the Oaxacan valleys, mountains and coastal regions
contributing to this robust cuisine, Oaxaca today offers a wide
variety of gastronomic pleasures - lifting what was basically peasant
food to incredible heights of culinary sophistication. Oaxaca is
really the place of choice to experience authentic pre-Hispanic
flavors; flavors that were enhanced by the skills of early convent
nuns and perfected by present-day chefs. The week long festival
offers a number of hands-on cooking opportunities taught by four
different local chefs, each known for their specialties. Additionally,
an impressive list of other events include wine tasting, chocolate
making, a coffee mill tour, Mezcal tasting, nature walks, archeological
tours, and trips to craft villages and markets.
12th Race Day or Columbus Day (Dia de la Raza)
It means literally "day of the race" and commemorates
Columbus' discovery of the New World and the founding of the Mexican
(mextizo) people. Festivities take place all throughout Mexico,
celebrating the many different races of Native Americans: Aztecs,
Mayas, Incas and the fusion between the Spanish and the many native
cultures. The Hispanidad day celebration on October 12 was proposed
by Spain in 1915 and adopted by México in the Alvaro Obregón
regime. The Colón monument, located in the Paseo de la Reforma,
receives floral offers to commemorate the encounter of the two worlds.
