1st to 17th 2008 San Miguel de Allende - International
Chamber Music Festival
This time-honoured tradition brings some of the most renowned musicians
to San Miguel for two weeks of concerts and workshops. The festival
provides an enrichment program for both professional musicians and
advanced students.
All concerts take place in the Angela Peralta Theatre, with free
concerts offered to the general public by the participants every
day in the Jardín, the Public Library, and in the Auditorium
of Bellas Artes. Guest musicians play in idyllic garden settings
and church atriums. The programme for 2006 features the Turtle Island
String Quartet, the Ying Quartet, the Vega String Quartet and the
St Petersburg String Quartet

2nd Mexico City - Cuauhtémoc Day
The city celebrates the last Aztec emperor who surrendered to Cortez
with dances and ceremonies. August 13th sees the commeroration of
the Fall of Tenochtitlan. The celebration, with re-enactments of
the last battle of the Spanish Conquest, is held on Paseo de la
Reforma in front of Monument of Cuauhtemoc and in the Zocalo.
6th Petatlán, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo - The Day of Our
Lord Jesus Christ
The people of Petatlán take part in a theatre play called
the Game of Cortés (Juego de Cortés) to honour Jesus
Christ. It is a battle simulation in which opponents dance with
machetes and use their caps as shields. During this celebration
a local fair is held with music, food, dance and other entertainment.
15th Assumption Day (Dia de la Asuncion de la Virgen)
This event is celebrated with processions, parades of flowers and
rites all over the country, and especially in Mexico City with a
huge mass at the Basilica de La Virgen de Guadalupe, home of the
original image of the Virgin which is revered nationwide.
15th to 20th Huamantla, Tlaxcala - Day of the Virgin of Charity
and Assumption Day
Highlights of this celebration include 'carpeting the streets' and
a running of bulls. The whole town and many visitors engage in a
religious procession through the brightly decorated streets, giving
a carpet like appearance. While some of the roads are decorated
with fresh cut flowers and moss, the majority are decorated with
colored sawdust to create fantastic designs. The main church in
the town is the focal point of the celebration, with bands and amazing
sand paintings.
A Mexican version of the Pamplonada - the famous Spanish running
of the bulls - in which the locals demonstrate their courage running
with 20 bulls that are let loose in the streets for a couple of
hours.

Local celebrations and regional dances in honour of the Saint Patron
Luis.
