The gloCaltravel Guide to Ecotourist Destinations in Mexico

Click on the map on the right for extra information on each area

In this guide we would like to highlight the ecotourist destinations all over the country

We want you to enjoy 'the Real Mexico', its untouched sceneries and amazing cultural heritage, and we want you to discover it with operators who show an approach to the tourist development based on sustainability and respect for the environment.

Describing the country as a whole is quite of a challenge, but I think Marlene Ehrenberg did an amazing job with her definition of Mexico.

I am publishing an excerpt of her tour leaflet

"Mexico is..."

a horn of plenty fringed by the coastal lace of its four oceans - Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean and Sea of Cortez the land of the obsidian, with its 8,000 volcanoes, from the ancient Citlaltepetl to the young Paricutín the navel of the moon, where Coatlicue birthed Coyolxauhqui and Huizilopochtli the prodigious corn cob with 400 kernels reproducing 400 times the house of the cosmic race, home to people who celebrate life through death the place where all climates are interwoven, origin of the tomato, chocolate and avocado the millenary fire where a thousand moles are cooked the refuge to hummingbirds, turtles, whales, and monarch butterflies the land of earthquakes where architects built wonders, from the Mayan builders to Barragán and Artigas the canvas painted by Kahlo, Rivera, Orozco and Toledo the screen projecting Gabriel Figueroa and Maria Felix the realm of common places the birthplace of Mariachis and Huapango, where Velasco sings “Besame mucho” the floating garden of survivors and tamales vendors the place where shamans bathe us in temascales, where we drink posh and tesgüino.

A visit to Mexico can turn you into the artisan of your own holiday

Marlene Ehrenberg is a pioneer in the development of Responsible Tourism in Mexico. With over 35 years of experience in the organization of “alternative” tours, she is the co-founder of COMECO (Mexican College of Ecotourism).
She designed fabulous cultural tour itineraries, like the Frida Kahlo Route and the Route of Cortez.
